I have my receiver and a 5.1 setup connected to my PC via HDMI, my receiver has support for 2 additional front high speakers and Dolby Pro Logic IIz. I have 2 extra speakers laying around, is it worth it for games?
There really aren't that many PC games that support the use of any of matrix encoded Pro Logic formats for dynamic 3D positional audio. Its really only works well when mixed in a studio and so the engineer can ensure that the correct sounds are actually coming out of the correct speakers. I doubt there are any games at the moment that include Dolby Pro Logic IIz encoders and there might never be any.
Since you're using HDMI you shouldn't be using any variation of Dolby Pro Logic or even Dolby Digital with games. You can just use simple uncompressed unencoded multi-channel PCM audio. It doesn't support front high speakers as near as I can tell, but it will support standard 7.1 surround so you can use your two spare speakers for that if your receiver supports it.
I use HDMI PCM MULT CHNL on my receiver, and I didn't know that it doesn't support front high speakers. I'll just be sticking with my 5.1 setup Thanks for the info guys!
