Front height channel useable in 2.1?

Onkyo ht-rc260. I ask because in the receiver settings I can only set the crossover and levels of the front high channel when the surround channel is enabled, and even then they don't work, the only time I get sound is the pink noise when setting the channel levels.

All the settings are correct, fronts set to normal, terminals assigned to front high.

I thought they were only usable with incoming 7.1 or higher audio streams.

And that's assuming your source material is even encoded with a height channel.

The height channel is supposed to work in pro logic, pliix whatever, mode, so it should still output in 2.1.

err, no. when you output 2.1 it's just the mains and the sub.

At any rate, I'd go for a center channel before I worried about height.
