I have a Duron 850, 256mb RAM & voodoo3 3000 agp. Would replacing the voodoo3 3000 to a radeon 7500 be a major boost in perf.?

Yes,thats a nice upgrade & if you can swing the cash, jump up to the Radeon 8500/8500LE for a bigger boost:)

Skip the R8500 then, it doesn't like low power psus. The GF2/GF3/GF4 have no problem with a 250w in my experience.

Disinformation alert!

Overall quality and line amps matter more than the claimed wattage rating. Besides, the PSU does not regulate power to the slot -the mainboard does that. A 235W powers my system with a 8500 fine.

FWIW, the R8500 consumes less power then the GF3/4 Ti series.... the reg. R8500's power consumption is in-line with the GF4 MX460 in 3D, and the MX440 in 2D.

Yeah sure, and the tech support board at Rage3d isn't full of guys being told to buy higher watt psus to cure their problem with lockups...

I had an R8500 in a box with a 250watt psu that ran a GF3 original and a GF4 4400, flawlessly, day in day out.

My Radeon 8500 retail, on the other hand would lock up for no apparent reason while playing games. Hmmmm. What could it be?
Temperature? Nope. This box is in my basement, where the air temp is never more than 70f, it's a full tower with a front fan sucking air in, two in back pushing it out. My cpu is always cool....hmmmmm...
How about driver conflict? Nah, couldn't be that. Fdisk/format. IRQ conflict? Nope, everything had it's own. PCI next to AGP? Nope. Latest 4in1s? Nope. Latest bios for motherboard (Epox 8KHA+)? Nope. Drivers for the 8500? Nope, tried lots, and they were pretty mature by the time I tried the 8500 early this year.

What could the answer to this mystery be? After 5 years in IT/IS, I think I can install a VGA- at least it worked the other 100 times I've done it. But you're probably right- "disinformation alert". The R8500 is the most trouble free card to hit the planet, no matter what hardware you have. And the GF3/GF4 ran fine for months before and after , with no tweaking whatsoever, because I got special boards sprinkled with pixie dust that even an oaf like me could install.

Excuse me, I have to warm up my Van der Graaf generators so I can pass some RAM DIMMs through the electrical arc between them before installation......

LOL- I've got no beef with ATI(or anyone else), I'm typing this on a 9700. Love it. Loved my VIVO, 32 DDR, MAXX, and I think it was a Powergraph(?) with 2 whole MBs of VRAM back in the day.

I probably get a little bent when people say I'm giving bad info about the 8500, because it has no known power/driver/stability issues.

The psu was a "Suncheer REAL POWER 250 P ATX" which is admittedly a crummy "came with the case" psu. That doesn't the fact it worked fine with all my other VGAs, which supposedly consumed more power.

I'll go take a prozac and try to be more "matter of fact" with advice.

I'd like to hear how much better the 8500 is?

I went from a V5 to an 8500 and really noticed the speed plus the better 2d.

So Rhonda85, tell us how it worked out.

I run an 8500 and some other ati radeons and just got a GF3 to replace a GF2.

I had just the same circumstance for my kiddo's machine. The Radeon 7500 did indeed make quite a difference for his
gaming capabilities (not one new game had a problem with the new setup).
His machine was a K6-2/500 394mb 2Xagp, and it runs MANY of his games in FULL video functionality!
My inclination is to wholely ENDORSE your contemplated move to the 7500 card.
The dual monitor feature is sort of tricky to get used to, but you will likely wonder how you ever did without it.
For the $59.00 cost (after rebate) there is just no other sane solution. Do be careful about the driver upgrades though,
the VERY latest versions may not be as functional for a machine with the limited processor capabilities you describe.
