What’s Happened To M. Night Shyamalan?

The curious case of M. Night Shyamalan is a tragic tale, a story so epic in scope that it spans the first decade of the 21st century. It is a tale that begins in the sunlight, with the birth of a filmmaker whose first hit feature earned him major accolades and a bankable name at the multiplex. Within the depths of that artist’s soul lay a far more sinister figure, a diabolical Hyde to his kindly Dr. Jekyll, capable of crafting such deplorable cinematic schlock that it would leave the world trembling in its wake.

Seriously though, how did M. Night Shyamalan go from being so beloved to utterly reviled in the eyes of film critics and a growing portion of the moviegoing public?

How do you go from the Sixth Sense to The Last Airbender and After Earth?

Well, he was due to go below zero, looks like he avoided that.

"I was most amused that the reviewer in the Grauniad said that M. Night. Shymalan had "arrested the decline in his career" because After Earth was "at least not worse than his last film".

Most likely he was given an idea by a friend, made off with it like it was his own, and paid the friend off handsomely to keep his mouth shut.

With friend out of the picture, we see that M. Night's actual work is a steaming pile of dogshit.

Didn't things go downhill when he signed that (12?) movie deal? I would guess the pressure to produce that many good films would have an effect on your creativity.

I don't recall Devil, but signs is a movie about aliens invading a planet where ~70% of the surface is water and water falls from the sky and oh yeah, water kills them. I think you can determine the quality of the movie/story from here.

I have no idea how Signs got such a good rotten tomatoes score except possibly it was his first shit movie and reviewers were still loving him from Sixth Sense.

Unbreakable was better than Sixth Sense IMO, I saw that Bruce Willis was dead from the get go. Don't understand how so many were surprised about that. Signs was OK. After that, everything SUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This phenomenon has also happened to other artists.......Lucas also went Shamalamadingdong.

It's as if the creative juice reality mechanism hits a circuit breaker and never, ever again goes back online.

His conclusions are so horrifcally bad you want to punch him and the studio in the nuts for funding such tongue-in-cheek POS joke endings, such as that Mel Gibson water alien movie (wow, seriously?).

I didn't know, until recently, After Earth was directed by him. At first, I was shocked to see the RT ratings, but then I saw the Shamalamabong name attached and had a good laugh. It all made sense.

Uwe Boll, Lindelof and Shamalamadingdong...the Mt. Rushmore of big wallet stupidity

He has *always* been terrible, not sure why people thought Sixth Sense was a good movie. Just because a movie has an art-school predictable 'twist' ending doesn't make it good.

Unbreakable was tolerable, albeit painfully predictable again, solely thanks to SLJ's character portrayal.

I know it's trendy to hate on popular things around here but I just legitimately am gobsmacked he was considered good at any point in his career.

This. I hate hearing about this guy's 'promising career.'

No. No it wasn't. Even if you allow The Sixth Sense on the 'good' list (it's not good), everything else he's made has been awful. Signs went full-retard. Unbreakable was just boring and worthless.

'You are invincible! My complete opposite!'

Uh, doesn't that mean you should be dead, Samuel L Jackson? This movie would be better if you were dead.

Unbreakable has one of the best and motivational scenes ever for a gym rat, that weightlifting scene is damn epic.

Two months ago at Syfy headquarters:

Exec 1 "So, we have a chance to get M. Night to create a show for us"

Exec 2 "Great. People love M. Night. It will really gives us some scifi cred after we cancelled every decent scifi show we have"

Exec 1 "Yeah, lets announce he's doing a pilot for us today. Why wait?"

Exec 3 "Well, there is a matter of the Last Airbender. Some people are saying M. Night is not really very good. He has a new movie coming out, After Earth, with Will Smith. Should we wait a couple of months and see how it goes?"

Exec 1 "Are you crazy? Its a science fiction movie with Will Smith! It's directed by M. Night Shymalan. What could possibly go wrong?"

Execs 2 and 3 together "You're right! Announce it today! We're gonna be science fiction Gods! We're all gonna win Emmys"
