From Sys Admin to Developer ?

I am an accomplished sysadmin for a large US corporation. I have a passion for Operating Systems, and I would love to move into the world of developing Operating Systems.

I have a fair background in Perl and Bash, but strictly in the arena of administration.

I have a strong background in *NIX environs, and I have spent considerable time mastering the Linux OS.

When I daydream of an ideal development career I typically invision long painstaking hours spent in the attemtps to create embedded , Unix-style, operating systems for either past, present, or future appliances.

Where should I begin ?

Sounds like you love stuff that most of us would leave in a second - long painstaking hours spent developing (I'm assuming) open-source software typically means that recognition is almost nil.

It's a debated fact that the GPL stifles innovation through its socialist tendencies. I'm not exactly sure which type of development you'd like to go into, but I do know this: there are very few people who get rich developing for Linux.

That said, I have no idea how you'd get started in that field.
