From RC5 to ECCp to D2OL. What do I need to know about D2OL?

I've never tried to sneakernet D2OL. What I do know is that it can be run in offline mode so a net connection isn't nessesary when processing info. From what I do know a connection may be needed to upload and download but I haven't tried it.

There is a great addon for D2OL called Dspy. I don't have a link right now becuase I'm at work but it isn't hard to find.

If you have to sneakernet then I think Distributed Folding might be a good project for that.

Well they all have nics so I should be able to get them all on line at some point... So as long as I can put a huge que on them so that I only have to dump every week or month then things should be fine...

Now, could anyone tell me what I need to do to join (the node thing is confusing me... :p ) and get on the TeAm? Also what if anything should I do to speed up the client.

Well I think you are going to need a net connection because each node has to connect to the website and register itself.

If you go to the teams link on the D2OL site and put in your user name and password you can then claim your nodes and join a team from your homepage.

Well I can get them an internet connection when needed. It will just not have it all the time. (Not yet will get a switch soon enough). The only thing I am wondering is if the que will be big enough so that I don't have to dump everyday... My fastest machine will be a 1.3Ghz Duron with 128 mb or ram running on either Win98 or Linux... Probably linux.

you can que up to 100 candidates with D2OL. With your machine you should be putting out about 50 a day...so a dump every other day...I guess that is twice as good as every day.

I guess it is better than every day. :) Well at least I now have a reason to get my router/switch.

Remy,
I don't have a router right now either, so I keep a p3550 offline. I've been able to store up to 150 candidates on mine when I set the cache to 100. Depends on your machine, but the 550 only does maybe 15-20 a day so I don't have to dump for up to a week. When you do go online make sure to wait at least 10 mins. for it to download new clients then upload the candidates you have processed. Also the results may not appear immediately on DDol stats(usually another 10 min).
Also, Linux seems the way to go, somehow it seems to be more efficient with the java based client. I've seen people claim up to 75% better than windows. I don't know personally, but will be installing Mandrake on the pentium this weekend to find out.
Anyhow, It is a pretty cool project(I guess it's not cool it's needed) and our recent surging in the ranks is making others take notice. I've browsed other team boards searching for tips and TeamAnandTech is being mentioned alot. Good Luck.

Open up the Agent,
On the left side above conformers processed and below the candidate picture there are a few buttons. The one with the check mark is the one to check. At the bottom of that is candidate que size, set that as high as you want (100 it willusually get more). Have the box checked Online when your connected and it will download and upload for you.

I believe all the clients are java clients and you can close the output window and keep the client running.

As soon as you select to put the client "online" it will attempt to connect to the internet and fill the desired cache size. It my pause for a minute or two on one number but it will start right up again quickly and fill the cache.

You can get some answers to questions by going to the Forum Link at the stats site. :) I see a number of Linux discussions there.

You can click on properties on the Agent and adjust the slider to download up to 100 Cands for que. It will do a 1 for one download each time you send a result. Alternatively you can download 100, move the slider down to 10 and crunch those and when you get down to 10 just move the slider up to 100 and refill.

You improve performance and reduce ram usage by tuning off animations and reducing detail.

There is a readme file with the client that tells how to run it in cli mode but I haven't tried to make it work.

That was the command I think. Ill have to setup a Linux machine sometime soon (can you imagine me not having a linux machine when I do a heck of a lot of linux troublesooting in the OS forum? :p) and see what I can do. They mentioned a custom install script for an X-less Linux setup because of a bunch of X errors.
