I just got finished watching it, and the ending was absolutely horrible! One of maybe 3 movies that I've ever seen where the ending completely killed what was otherwise not a bad movie. Why did the directors have to do that?

You did see the ending, right? Like the last 5 minutes of it? Are you one of those people that will leave 10 minutes before the movie ends, thereby ruining the whole ending for yourself, just so you can get to your car first and get out of there?

this was a trippy, kinda freaky, great movie, AND the best part a lot of it was very historically accurate!
I thought this movie was very well filmed and acted. I thought Johnny Depp was great and so was Heather Graham.

Read my first post again... I didn't say the entire movie was bad, I was actually rather enjoying it till the ending ruined the whole experience for me.
It's kind of like when you're watching a porn and it ends before the money shot. That kind of thing.

Johnny Depp give some lame-ass excuse as to why he can't go be with Heather Graham and bang the hell out of her every night. Instead, he burns her letter and never goes to see her. If there were a decent reason for him to do that, it wouldn't have been so bad, but the Ripper was already given a lobotomy and in jail. Everyone else that knew about it or would have cared about the girl being alive had already washed their hands of the whole issue. I was literally yelling at Depps character calling him a fscktard for passing up on the woman. And then you have Heather Graham. Now she's gonna wait the rest of her life for Depp, meaning noone else gets to see her naked for the rest of her life.
Umm...I think he didn't leave London because he chose his opium addiction over the girl...
If you want the typical Hollywood happy ending, watch the alternate ending on the DVD.
As hot as she is, do you really want to see her naked while in character as a nineteenth century Whitechapel whore?

The whole movie was so dark and moody.. it never really let up.

I don't think he was choosing his opium addiction over the girl because shortly after that he kills himself by ODing on opium. It wasn't an accidental overdose either, he had the 2 gold coins to put over his eyes already in his hand ready to go. I assumed it meant he was so depressed over the girl he killed himself.
And usually I'm all for the bad guy winning and having the controversial every once in a while. Just not like in this movie.

I don't know what happens in the alternate ending, because I like the original cut and don't want to ruin it. I heard he goes to Ireland with Graham, which I think is stupid. I don't think it was so much an intentional overdose as him giving in to his addiction and depression and just giving up after experiencing so much fscked up stuff...
