i just made this upgrade, and now my coax has no digital data.

what i used to do with my audigy2zs was watch movies in coax (pl II movie mode), and then play games using direct (6 ch direct), but now my coax doesnt appear to work.

is this normal? should i just use direct from now on, and get rid of the coax cable altogether? thanks for any input.

thanks john, that's the exact cable im using actually. now for the 2nd part of your advice, how do i 'switch the x-fi flexi mode to digital i/o' thanks friend

Use the console launcher to configure each panel.

1) Game Mode - click settings
2) Entertainment - click the icon on the far right (Digital I/O)
3) Audio Creation - click settings on the lower left

Here's a pic of the Audio Creation panel

The Audio Creation mode is the only mode that allows 44.1kHz (no upsampling) and bit-perfect.

Wow, upgrade to an X-Fi just to bypass it using digital. -_-

By 6ch direct for games chr6 seems to mean analog so nothing wrong there. As for digital out for movies they then take advantage of a hardware decoder instead of software which at least allows EZ toggling of any features via remote control, if not actually being more reliable, better quality and precluding any interference. Everything else being equal, the only difference betwixt analog and digital output for pre-encoded streams would be the comparative quality of the DAC's on the card and receiver/pod. Otherwise deciding which to use comes down to features (DSP effects on either end) and convenience (reducing the necessity of fiddling with settings).

I'm guessing the Flexi-Jack control is available from the Audio Console but in any case it can't be too hard to find 😉

OP are you sure your settings for your software is correct if you are watching movies in PLII....?

Yeah, I was gonna comment on that but forgot. Make sure to disable all software decoders (set to S/PDIF pass-through) and toggle the pod's options 'till it just says plain "Dolby Digital" or whatever rather than a mock surround mode like Pro-Logic.

Theres also a setting for my A2ZS that needs to be set in the control panel to bypass the decoder along with the one in the software.

OP, look into this, it will make a world of difference.

i will, thanks, @ work til 3am tomorrow. bad fireworks company. bad bad. this is my first time using a creative control panel. i never fiddled with it when i had the audigy2 zs

Well then prepare to be impressed with actual Dolby digital surround sound. Up until now it has only been emulating surround.

Yeah if PLII is displayed during DVD playback over the digital connection then it has prolly been downmixing to 2ch (with matrixing) on the PC end or, less likely, on the pod end (more difficult to imagine you would have made that mistake though). By "disable all software decoders" I was including the software included with the card.

You never fiddled with the console... but apparently you should have... how long have you been missing out on the full effects? :Q

Go to SPDIF I/O and DECODER tabs. If you screen capture those I will tell you the apporpriate settings. Also, what program do you use to play DVD's?

While I am waiting on the screen shots:

Turn Dynamic range compression to "quiet environment" or off. You don't want that unless you need it to be quiet

Turn off for movies and music. You will use your pod to do this if you really want to.

Select SPDIF or digital out or whatever the passthrough option is

and i just installed the different consoles like you have (its on the install cd)

Select the Dolby Digital/DTS bitstream out and apply. Then make the changes I showed above in Power DVD. Your Z-5500 "pod" should say DOLBY DIGITAL when a movie is playing

Edit: you shouldn't need to mess with the other consoles. This should get your Dolby digital and DTS(if your pod supports it) playback working.

great advice guys. -ry, thanks for all the help buddy. it worked just like you said, and my pod says [][] Digital 🙂

and my games sound fantastic.

I assume those boxes are the Dolby Digital logo Like this?

And if you pick the DTS track on the DVD it should say "DTS"

I assume your still using the analog connection for gaming? Should sound pretty good with that card 🙂. Have fun with it!

yeah thats it, ill try popping in a dts dvd tonight.

also- this morning i was listening to some mp3's, and the sound would go in and out (kind of like fading in and out randomly) this ever happen to you? i fiddled around with the mode, i think i changed it to audio creation, and it went away.

I don't own the Z5500's or a X-fi. I output digitally to my receiver. So no, that has never happened. What option did you change and what player were you using. Were you using the analog or digital connection(I would recommend the analog for music)
