From ATI Radeon X850XT PE to Geforce 8800 GTX

How much performance increase would I notice?

Also, what chipset should I go for when buying a motherboard? 650i? 680i? I'm goin for a quad core Intel.

Also, what type of RAM should I go for? DDR2 1066?

performance should be pretty significant depending on what resolution u play at. if its 1280x1024 then prob minimal, anything above should be a big increase.
i'd say 680i, but then again, i haven't researched much, just know its the newest nvidia chipset.
the type of ram depends on if ur planning to OC... u can run C2D's @ DDR2 533...

Seriously, unless you're overclocking, just get whatever memory is cheapest. I'm reasonably sure that most boards run the memory at 533 regardless of its rating unless you're overclocking the CPU, though this may not be the case with everything. Regardless of that, there's not too much performance increase in faster memory since the FSB is full with dual channel 533mhz DDR2. The reason you want faster memory when overclocking is because the memory needs to keep pace with the rising FSB.

People have been getting very good results with p965 based boards, but the new P35 boards are even better, and I doubt they're out of your price range since you're talking about DDR2 1066, quad core, and a GTX

What's new with the P35 boards? What's the difference between that and the 680i?

I may be wrong but I think that the P35 is Intel's new mid-range chipset which uses DDR3 memory (kicks the butt of DDR2 memory). The 680i is nVidia's latest high-end chipset.

Intel has a new high-end chipset to replace the 975X, but it is not released yet. You should check out Anandtech's review of the P35 chipset on their front page if you want more information.

The difference between an X850XT and an 8800GTX is phenomenal. Playing NFS:MW completely maxed out, my overclocked 7900GT at 1600x1200 gets better frame rates than my X850XT at 1024x768. Check this out:

(Okay, it's Tom's Hardware but these results are pretty reliable.)

At maximum settings, new games can go from barely playable to very, very, very smooth even at 1024x768, although if you are going to play games at that resolution you probably shouldn't buy an 8800GTX unless you're rich.

p35 can use either ddr2/ddr3 or both (though not both at one time), so a board will have either 4 slots ddr2, 4 slots ddr3, or 2 ddr2 and 2 ddr3. It is the replacement for i965 and appears to be a bit faster, x38 is the replacement for 975 and is due later this summer. If you are considering sli then 680i the best option, if you aren't then a 965/975/p35 or x38 could work depending on features and overclocking needs. If you are looking at a q6600 (the least expensive quad) then wait till july 20th or so as its price is set to drop to around $260 (and x38 might be out by then), though as far as I know nobody knows if x38 is going to have ddr2 as an option.

i guess if i were you i would do a lot of reading as to what you actually need. assuming you have had your x850xtpe for some time as it a couple gens old, many things have changed since then and reading would be your best bet.

also take into account that now is another turinng point w/ ddr3 coming slowly on the scene, so look at those options too.

you also don't tell us anything about your uses, so valuable input is possibly being lost with your vague original question. if you tell us what you are doing, what software, what resolutions your answers will be specific to you and not just general statements.

welcome to the forums 🙂

What kind of answer are you looking for: "lots" (qualitative), or "359.2%" (quantitative).

Anyway, it's a meaningless question unless you specify an app or benchtest: for SuperPi none, for 3DMark06 lots.

Mostly for gaming. I want to be able to play newer games like Supreme Commander and C&C Tiberium Wars. And upcoming games also.

Anyone know if the games currently being released are multi-threaded? Does it matter if I got quad core? I heard it doesn't because the bulk of the work of the newer games rely almost solely on the videocard .

What you heard is mostly correct, although there are some like SupCom that do take full advantage of quad-core
