QFT

I got a 3.88 in High School...mainly because it was so flippin easy. In college I have like a 3.0. When you are a full time student and have a full time job to pay for everything...you have little time for homework. Glad I'm about done...one class away. Well then I go and get another degree somewhere else...gah.

Since I do hiring and management of IT at the company I work for, I base it more off a combination of things...

GPA is secondary unless the candidate has no prior experience. The difference between a 3.2 and a 3 is very very small. If there were two candidates with a 3.0 and a 3.2 GPA, I would look at other factors such as knowledge, experience, certifications, and attitude. If the guy with the 3.0 was better in these categories, I would hire him in a heartbeat.

Same here (helped hire software developers for my last job and current one).

GPA is a tiebreaker as long as it's over 3.0. A 3.0 who did some good internship / co-op work has an edge over a 3.6 with no real experience.

Also, GPA does matter for your first year or two after college, then no one cares and experience is all that matters.

I could care less about the GPA when I hire. I look for personality and experience over book smarts anyday

Out of curiosity, what jobs are you hiring for?

"Book smarts" are a very good thing for a software developer to have, but are certainly less impotant in sales or service jobs.

Having served on a few search committees, I would have to say that we usually look at the whole package-- don't sweat over a 0.2 difference.

It depends...if you want an internship here, you must have a 3.2 or better. If you want to hired full-time, then GPA not as important.

Don't ask me why...it's just what the requirements are for internships.

Yes, but small differences in GPA's can be overcome with more experience, better attitude, etc. But, if you have a 2.0 and did nothing but party on the weekends, and you're up against someone with a 3.6 who had an internship, and a pretty packed resume highlighting a variety of relevant skills (ex. leadership in volunteer activities by chairing a committee for a huge fundraiser) then they're not going to even bother calling you in for an interview.

i understand that a good interview can go a long way, but getting that interview in the first place may depend on the GPA, right?

do companies usually post GPA-minimums to be considered?

As long as the GPA meets minimum requirements (most companies post their requirements) then it's not that important compared to experience, skills, communication, and leadership abilities

I won't hire anyone with less than a 3.0. Anything less than a 3.0 screams 'lazy' to me.

Do you have other experience or are you coming straight out of school? If you have full time experience, the GPA means nothing. If you're coming straight out of school the difference may mean a little, but not a huge amount.

<--- is in recruiting

I have hired people both at Microsoft and Amazon and in both cases I don't even look at GPA, all I care about is what the candidate knows or not.

It's funny how people automatically assume people with higher GPAs don't have any work experiences.

3.2 with experience > 3.0 with experiences
as with
3.2 without experience > 3.0 without experience

Stop assuming variables to level the playing field.
