From 6600GT to 6800GT - What are the gains?

What can I expect if I upgrade to eVGA 6800GT from Leadtek 6600GT TDH? Other than games, what other areas/programs will improve with the upgrade? Are the 6800GTs worth double the 6800GTs? Is the eVGA 6800GT a good card?

evga is a good brand.

i doubt youll see much difference in anything but games, and in those you can expect to go up in resolution and add some aa/af eyecandy.

Yep, eVGA is good.

You'll likely only notice any difference in games, where you'll be able to run higher resolutions and/or with AA/AF on/up. Depending on what resolution you game at you can expect roughly double the performance at times.

As for if a 6800GT is worth double a 6600GT it all depends. Personally I like running higher resolutions and with eye candy turned up, so it'd be worth it to me. If thats not a big deal to you then probably not.

I'm not a "gamer" but enjoy the occassional game here and there. But if an upgrade improved other areas other than gaming I could justify it. Would it improve internet streaming video capabilities?

No, it probably would do almost nothing. If you just game occasionally there is no reason to get a 6800gt, the 6600gt should be plenty fast for you.

No not really. If that's all you want it for, then you probably don't even need that 6600 you already have. What games do you occasionally enjoy? If it's something like solitaire, you are wasting a good video card. These cards are high end 3d accellerators for enthusiasts.

As has been said, if you aren't planning on cranking up the resolution and playing with the AA/AF settings you won't notice a difference.

Nope. Gaming is gonna be the big increase. The real difference is in the processing pipelines, which are only "enabled" when you do something 3D. The other difference is in the memory interface: 256-bit on the 6800GT VS 128-bit on the 6600GT. The main difference here is the amount of eye candy (read: AA and AF) that can be enabled and maintain playable framerates. You are NOT, repeat NOT going to see any difference unless you are doing things that involve 3D.

You said that you're an occasional gamer. If so, then just stick with the 6600GT.

EDIT: HEHE! Got ahead of myself posting 😱

The purevideo capabilities are promoted as decoding WMV HD on the 6600GT, so you are actually losing some functionality outside of gaming.......if they ever get the drivers and DLLs available for it that is! 😛 😉

Jesus dont do that move lol.

Save your money and buy a next gen card hihi.If i could go back in the past...i would have purchase a 6600 gt instead of my 6800gt hehe( upgrade from a 9800 pro)
The difference between the 660 and 6800 is minor.YES the 6800 is better..but not worth the extra cash you spend.

If you only play games occasionally, does that make them play better on lesser hardware? What is the difference if you play all the time or occasionally? Is it that suck framerates are more bearable on an intermittent basis? Not saying a 6600GT is a slouch. It is by no means a slouch. Just compared to a 6800GT it is especially when things get cranked up.

When someone says the yplay games accasionally (sp?), most people think that it means stuff like The Sims (2), not HL2 and Doom 3. On a lot of games like that, the only way you'll notice a difference is if you are trying to run it off of an Apple Cinema HD Display or something with a ridiculous resolution. Of course, if you play HL2, Far Cry, Doom 3 occasionally, the 6800GT may be worth the money. Most people just thought that gaming occasionally meant playing games that aren't as mean towards your hardware.

Yah, my friends father only plays one game occasionally. But it's Doom3.

No offense but paying $200 for the increase you'd see going from a 9800 Pro to a 6600GT makes no sense. There isn't a big enough difference between those two to justify paying $50 for.
