From 20" to 24" worth it?

Hey all; I am considering doing an upgrade from my Viewsonic 20" 1680x1050 monitor in a few months time to a 24" 1080p monitor (1080p over 1900x1200 because I want to be able to connect my PS3 and X360). Will the extra 4 inches really be a noticeable improvement to my gaming experience (no sex jokes please :p)? Will it be worth the ~$200 it will cost to upgrade the monitor? Also; is LED backlighting worth the cost over a conventional LCD?

100% for size and Res upgrade.

LED i'm not sure, but I wouldn't reccomend paying a big $$$ hike to go LED when you can get great 24" LCD panels for reasonable amounts of money.

20" to 24" will certainly be an improvement and if it's in your budget i'd say go for it! Not really the same but I moved from a 19" 1280x1024 to a 23" 1920x1080 2 yeard ago and it was a HUGE difference.

For the LED thing, I really can't help you with that, sorry.

I was considering 27" screens as well, but I only sit ~2.5 feet from the screen so that may be too much.

go for it. the cost difference between LED and non-LED is negligible. most panels are going LED now so it's hard not to find one now-a-days.

I went from 19" 1440x900 to 22" 1680x1050 a couple years ago and it was a night and day difference. This is an even bigger jump, you'll be happy you did it.

Sounds like any overwhelming "go for it." :) Any one think that 27" would be too big? Any model recommendations would be appreciated. HDMI, and 3.5mm audio pass through are must have for me.

27" would definitely not be "too big", however it will cost more to get a quality 27" monitor than a quality 24" unit. Don't just pick out a 24" unit for, say, $400 or whatever, then say "hey, this 27" unit is on sale for $399 I'll get the larger monitor for the same price, woot!". A big reason my upgrade was so positive is that I went from a TN to an e-IPS. I don't know if those are in the 24" space yet or not, but if so they're reasonably priced and a huge upgrade over any TN unless you're a twitch FPS gamer.

While it will be a nice upgrade I would wait and save till you can get 120hz

worth...every...inch. I went from a 22" to a 24". Before I couldn't quite fit two windows on a single screen but now I can have for example a browser and a word-document open without the windows overlapping. I can almost say I don't "need" a bigger screen (but that doesn't mean I won't be buying one...) :)

The screen I got is a hp zr24w so the S-IPS (vs. TN in the old 22") panel is also partly to blame for my affection.

does 120 hz make that much of a difference? I've seen a few people talk about how great they are, but most owners complain of a buggy ownership experience.

I went from a 60hz 25" Hanns-G to a 23" 120hz Acer and i love it. BC2 is so smooth.

Definitely worth doing, more for the resolution than the size.

My XBox 360 works fine on my 1920x1200 screen, zero issues. If that was the only reason you rejected the size, reconsider.

abso freakin lutely. all my years of building, working on, supporting, etc i have found that the best investment is always the one that you interface with the most. The monitor, then the keyboard, then the mouse, then the sound.

If the computer becomes just about unuseable, then i buy new parts for the inside, cpu, mem, hdd, etc.

I guess I'd have to test out a 120Hz monitor IRL to know if it was worth the extra $$$ over the 24" ASUS I'm looking at. I've never had a chance to try one myself, so I'm understandably skeptical that it would be worth the extra money. Especially considering I'm not interested in 3D.

The 27" you are looking at are 1920X1080 which is an absolute waste at that screen size. 1920X1200 should be bought if going with a 27".

Also i didn't buy a 120hz monitor for 3D. I bought it because i wanted 120hz

I'm using that exact monitor right now. 3d is definitely buggy and I'm not sure about it at this moment but the 120hz is a must have right now. The OP mentioned playing BC2 and that's what I've been playing for the last few days. I'm getting anywhere from high 50's to 100fps with it completely maxed out. This was with a gtx 580 stock and a i7 at 3.45ghz. I just bumped up my cpu to 3.7ghz and I'm gonna see if that can keep me at about a 70fps average. It definitely gets smoother after 60fps. 100fps is smooth as butter. If you buy a monitor right now and it doesn't include 120hz then that is a huge mistake. I'm never going back to 60hz. 60hz is a dead technology IMO. The screen quality of that asus is great too.
