As has been pointed out by many others both in Off-Topic and in the real world, he wasn't doing too badly for someone who was fighting against the most corruptive influence of his world (the ring).
Not to mention he was a small fellow with (if I recall correctly) no real training in the use of arms.

Few who have found themselves in a combative situation have been trained adequately to not only defend themselves, but toi also gain victory on the battlefield. Battle experience comes from standing and fighting, not running or disappearing.
Frodo was portrayed as a gutless wimp, which he was because of his lack of training. The fact remains that he ran or hid rather than fight.. Wimp! 😉
