they've been sold the pc lie that everythings equal for far too long. sound is fundamental to experience, never being able to hear music, or voice is missing a massive chunk of human experience. its a huge disability.

I agree with this. Of course if they want to decline attempts to fix their own hearing that's fine, but ostracizing those who choose otherwise is bullshit. Being deaf IS a disability. Accept it.

It does not really matter whether hearing people consider it a disability - they do not. The PC idea from the hearing world is that deafness is a disability that MUST be fixed - it comes from people who can hear. It's hearing people assuming that they can never hear music or a voice, just because they do not perceive them in the same way.

Instead, they embrace it, own it, wear it as a symbol of pride, build a culture, language and customs around it.

They don't even like the PC phrase "hearing impaired" - too ambiguous. Just call it deaf. It's not offensive to the deaf to call them deaf.

Deaf people typically do not consider deafness to be a "disability" that needs to be corrected and that the life enrichment that comes from being a part of Deaf Culture provides greater benefit than the ability to hear sounds.

What I don't get is deaf people ostracizing/persecuting those that wish to get implants...but I can certainly see why a deaf person may choose not to do so.

Because there are deaf idiots just like idiots that can hear.

"Deaf Culture" yeah...enriching. I guess you don't have to hear bullshit from other people. But to miss so many other things cancels that out. No way is it a more "enriching".

Man, I can only see pics. Youtube is blocked at work (on a ship, which i'll be in until next month..). So, I'll have this marked until next month :p. I can only wish that tech like this gets exponentially better as time goes on. I can't wait what we can achieve in terms of human implants and replacement limbs. Very exciting stuff.

Thats compensating for disability. While commendable the problem is they've gone to the point where they have become dismissive of hearing. Sometimes to the point of trying to have deaf children, or preventing others from getting cochlear implants. Its a fearful small minded culture they seem to have built.

I agree. If someone came up to me and said "Hey, we can give you night vision, and it wont affect your regular vision (for the worse)" I would be happy for it. Live is about what we experience with our senses. The more senses, the more the experiences.
