Someone using your friend's computer fell for this trick: screenshot.

1) uninstall the McAfee antivirus and any remaining Symantec/Norton stuff using Add/Remove Programs, and reboot

2) install free AOL Kaspersky (or a trial version of full Kaspersky AntiVirus Personal 6), including configuring it as I show there.

3) update Kaspersky's virus definitions, reboot into Safe Mode and run a full scan. Kaspersky is way better at detecting these Zlob trojans than McAfee

4) if problems persist, get him to run John's full removal routine here: http://www.elitekiller.com/malware.htm Your pal has Weatherbug and worse, so I would recommend following John's guide. Or just nuke the entire Windows installation.

5) I also suggest Limited user accounts for daily-driver stuff like Web browsing, IM, media playback and email, it's much safer. If he has roommates, visitors, or siblings who borrow his computer, he should leave a separate Limited account for them, then password-protect his own Admin and Limited accounts so they can't get into them. This would've prevented his current problem, unless he's the one who got suckered.

One little minor detail---its busted his internet so lets not be too quick to install or uninstall anything. But adaware is not the program to scan for trojans---but McAfee should be---but if its not picking it up---then you can only hope that a cd containing the existing definitions in AOL kaspersky can.---if not you can use various the various other free anti-virus programs---using another computer you can both download and install something like avast or avg--and also download the latest definitions.---major geeks is a good site for that.---but the constrain is always--only one active AV running on the computer at the time.

But in terms of fixing the internet---rebuilding the winsock can sometimes get the lack of internet fixed. Just google winsock fix for a variety of free utilities that will rebuild the win sock file using another computer.
