My HOA is worthless. They wouldn't tow a car that is parked in my space or let me replace my windows, even though I'm growing mold inside the wall. At least they cut the grass and maintain the pool.

The most apalling part is that there are (at least) 60 residents who are late on their payments. What idiots.

AFter fighting the HOA for 6 months regarding the setback of my fence from the sidewalk, I was asked to be on the board. This is a HOA of 160 Houses. I plan on bringing some common sense to this board. I'm 23.

I would think you could sue over the window. Mold can be a serious health issue.

Still you don't need a HOA to do that, where I grew up the city would fine people who didn't mow their lawns etc. If you parked where they weren't supposed to you got a parking ticket (or the boot for repeat offenders.) The whole idea of an HOA just seems so un-American (people telling me what I can do with my property.)

My HOA does not exist, and I can only assume that those that put control of their property under these gestapo groups of small minded people are a few sandwiches short of a picnic themselves.

Don't like what I plant in my yard, how often I mow (or not) or what color I paint my house, well then piss off. For the clueless that is called freedom, and that is how this country was founded.

On one hand I agree, but on the other I've seen entire sections of cities fall through the floor in value due to lack of rules relating to property upkeep. Also, you are saying that the city should do it and calling HOAs un-American, yet in your example they would be doing the same thing.

So it is OK if the City tells you what to do with your property but not your neighbors who you elected to the HOA board?

And you would be WRONG!!! I read the CC&Rs of my HOA prior to closing on our house and had no problem with any of the rules set forth in there. I've lived in my house for 6+ years now and had no problems with the HOA or how it is run.

You are right about one thing though, it is a free country and you are free to not buy a house in an HOA community. If you don't like it, well then you can piss off and buy a house somewhere else. Chances are I probably wouldn't like living next to an opinionated nutjob like you anyway.

I now return you to yet another B.S. Aimster thread.

I hate HOAs. It should be illegal for them to put a lien (lein?) on your house just because you forgot to send them $50 for a couple months. Infact, I think intrusive HOAs that demand you paint your house a certain color and keep your lawn mowed to 1/16th of an inch every Friday at 7pm, AND try to stuff 3 cars in a 2 car garage should be outlawed.

Reasonable HOAs like JulesMaximus' (are they reasonable? I hope they are, for my sake :p) should be allowed, but only if a city official is allowed to look over the rules list to make sure none of them are overly intrusive and demanding. Oh, and the max penalty for not following the HOAs rules should be limited by law to nothing more then a civil suit.

edit: We don't have an HOA. My parents specifically purchased a house in a neighborhood without one.

Thank god I live in a city and not in an HOA

Yes, thank god you live in a place where all you need to feel safe is an assault rifle with a full magazine.

didn't you have a run-in with your HOA over your wife's real estate marketing, or was that just a neighbor?

Hell, I'd say 60% of the homeowners in our neighborhood can't even get two cars in their two car garages. In fact, on our street alone (17 homes) only 4 of them could possibly park two cars in their two car garage.

hmm i agree something does not sound right. why would they tow the cars? i don't see something like that being in the rule book. unless people were parked against the rules anyway. IF true then people can really caomplain. I know if they towed my car (they wouldnt because i would nto be late) i would be calling the police to report a stolen car.

60 people doing t hat would make the police do something.

usually they just continue to fine you then just put a lein on the house. wich they can t hen force the sale of.

my HOA is extremely lax. never had a problem with people make complaints or they stopping anything.

its like 19 bucks a month and they keep the streets clean and trim all the plants in the neighborhood.

most people don't even care. they can't get anything done anyhow since they are never able to get a quorum. hehe.

I had more problems in my old home with no HOA. neighbor complained about every freaking thing.

The OP's friend should file complaints and/or sue. HOA's are usually allowed to lien (or even foreclose) for past due fees, but towing cars for that is something I've never seen in any CC&R anywhere.

HOA's = teh debbil IMO
