Friend's laptop woes

So my friend has gotten his ASUS Z7V1 laptop for almost a year, and his warranty is almost up( about 2-3 more weeks left). Load and behold his video card fried because the dust clogged up the heatsink and the fried as a result. Right now they want him to pay shipping both ways, labor and for the video card if ASUS doesn't warrant the fried video card. The company says that any damage from dust does not carry within the warranty. My friend doesn't know much about computers, so he didn't know he had to clean out the dust ocassionaly. Of course we know laptops are much more difficult to dissemble and stuff, so he wouldn't even think about opening it up. Right now they are even claiming that he opened the laptop and that already voided the warranty.

Does my friend have any claim or say?

Sorry, but probably not.

Tell him to just learn from his mistakes and move on. Now he knows more than most people about this thing. At least this time it's only costing him money.

I guess so, but I don't understand the logic. If he has to clean out the dust then he has to open the chasis. When you open the chasis you void the warranty. So either way he seem screwed. My feeling is that they are being a pain in the @$$ because his warranty is almost up in 2-3 weeks. I don't see how they can just slap him a big for 2 way shipping and labor.
