He can try doing a RESTORE.

Can be done from either Safe Mode or the Command Prompt.

In SAFE MODE:

go to START \ Run and type: msconfig
then click on 'Launch System Restore'

From COMMAND PROMPT:
type: %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
Follow the prompts to restore.

First try selecting "Use last known good configuration" from the boot menu. Failing that go into safe mode and run system restore and restore to a save point a week before this occured.

However if the registry is corrupt, you may not be able to get into safe mode. You'll have to restore the registry manually using this technique which is very tedious. This technique is MUCH easier if you use a BartPE boot disc instead and you can skip right down to just replacing the existing registry files with an old backup: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545

Hope this helps...

The only other alternative is to Create a NEW USER Account and
copy the OLD USER Profile to it if it still exists.

To check User Profiles, go to:
Start \ Settings \ Control Panel \ System \ Advanced \ User Profiles \ Settings

If it exists, continue. If not, you are out of luck.

Local ADMIN rights are needed to accomplish this.

First, Create a NEW Account.
go to Control Panel \ User Accounts tool
Give the Account a Name and make sure it has ADMIN Rights
then click 'Create Account'

Close User Account tool and LOG OFF.

Logon as New Account. The user profile will be created.

Log Off.

Login as ADMIN.
Return to the 'User Profiles'
Highlight the OLD User profile and click 'Copy To'
Under "Copy profile to" Browse to the New Account Name, then OK

Close dialog boxes, then log off.

Logon to New account. 90% of the time it will restore.

If not, it gets a little more complicated.
