Friend's laptop is not able to connect to internet...

Hi,

When I received the computer it was working somewhat with IE 6.0 (Older Dell Celeron WinXP). She was able to surf the internet to some extent on my network at home. She was concerned because when she put in her cc's website (www.chase.com) it would go to some kind of ask.com search site. That tells me she had a bunch of spyware/malware. I then downloaded Firefox and adaware SE.

Adaware came across a bunch (300+) items of spyware. Firefox simply did NOT work at all. So, then I thought I should download the latest Internet Explorer. The latest IE does not work either! It says Cannot Display Page. Keep in mind she is still connected to my network.

I think this has to be some sort of spyware and/or virus. I have ran HiJackThis and analyzed the log (using another website to help me) and that has not worked either.

Windows Update has been unsuccessful since she is having trouble surfing the Internet.

I appreciate you guys and your insight. I have received excellent help here in the past. Thank you for reading.

The best choice would be to reformat if that is an option.

I agree, best option without wasting a lot of time is to reformat.

Thanks everyone for the responses. I have since reformatted the computer and she is back to square one. I appreciate it!
