Friend's laptop hard might have died?

A suitemate just asked me to look at his laptop, and he's trying to burn a cd, and half way through it stops, and the hard drive is making this loud, annoying clicking sound. Its repeating it over and over, and then theres a bsod. I'm guessing the hard drive is dying, because he tells me that yesterday the hard drive sometimes would not boot up, it would tell him that the os was not found or something like that. What do you think his options are? He says he bought it from fry's about a year and a half ago, so I don't know if they'll replace it. Will he be able to buy a new laptop hard drive and just replace it?

Backup the important data ASAP.

Find out what the warranty coverage is.

Absolutely. In fact he should check out the IBM 40GNX series.

That cd he was burning was his backup stuff. I hope he can find his fry's receipt, anyone know if fry's will have his record in their database? I'm thinking since its a sony, sony will probably still have a warranty on it.

Put the HDD in a ziploc bag, stick it in the freezer for 30min, reconnect it and see what happens.
