My Ipod is being mean

anyways, I don't know if any of you are extremely familiar with ipod troubleshooting or whatever, but i'm giving it a shot, here's what happens:

when she connects it to her computer:

i imported my cd onto it and its in my library and everything but i wont go on my ipod and it always says do not disconnect...also doesnt show up in itunes as "my ipod" anymore like it used to

any ideas why this could be happening?

Steps in iPod troubleshooting:
1. Reset it (4th Gen, put hold on, take it off, hold menu+middle button until it resets, 3rd gen hold on, hold off, hold Play+Menu until reset)
2. If you can see it in Windows (as a drive) restore it (if possible)
2a. If restore not possible, run chkdsk on it to fix any drive errors.
Try to connect again.

What generation Ipod is it? My 1st gen (POS) use to do this all the time because of the firewire port. After so many times plugging and unplugging a firewire cable into it, the contacts from the firewire port would break off the main board of the Ipod. I had to open it up and resolder the contacts back onto the board to get it to work again.

3rd gen has the 4 buttons (pause, play, etc) on the top aligned together.

4th gen has those buttons on the round click wheel.
