My friend has an hp 9680 it is a PIII 650, I ran wcpuid and it came up with it as an asus board and via apollo 133 chipset.
Anyway what happens is whenever you try to access the internet at all or even turn on icq the mouse freezes, it stays wherever it was when the program opens but it goes invisible, meaning i can still click on stuff i just can not see the pointer. I have tried the adjusting the graphics to no avail and even updated the driver on the mouse, also tried a different mouse for kicks usb and ps2.

Need some advice so now I turn it over to the experts>>>
please help.

Is it a USB mouse?

I've had instances where in the BIOS I setup some option to enable the USB keyboard and mouse emulation, and it caused some erratic problems with the mouse and keyboard being recognised in Win2K. Might be the same in Win98 too.

it is a usb mouse, but is using ps2 adapter currently, I have turned off all options under msconfig which appeared to help but when his computer started and tried running icq it froze on the screen again while the pointer went invisible again. I have not tried downloading the latest drivers yet, and he is running windows ME but was haveing the same problem in win98.

It's a conflict with the backweb/keyboard (I dont remember exactly) software
Msconfig everything out and then give it a try

The other suspect after software is the modem. is it the evil riptide combo sound modem?

I used to have a HP 9682C which as far as I was ever able to figure out was the Canadian version of the 9680 with all the same hardware. I never had any trouble with my mouse dissapearing but that could be because I never used that stupid audio/modem thing as a modem. I think I read recently on the HP message board (I go there occasionally to see what problems I no longer have) you can use the network card that came with the computer as a modem as well. The drivers are apparently on the recovery CD somewhere but I don't remember where(you can check the HP site I'm just too lazy) and apparently those who've tried it said that it works just as well as the other modem. If that works and your friend has any money at all I'd suggest he buy some cheap sound card and dump the audio/modem thing cause I can attest to it being a complete POS.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the replies, I have not made it back overthere yet to try, but the first thing I did was take out all those crap hp cards. He is using a cable modem so i took everything out and even went with another network card. I need to check his bios but I have tried changing his mouse IRQ to no avail( I could not get it to change Win Me). I am going to try and do some bios changes and update the mouse drivers. If that fails what do you think about flashing the Bios since it is an asus board maybe I can eliminate all traces of HP and Start up with a Normal Computer and do a full install of Windows ME. I ' ll will let you guys know what happen I am going over there tonight or tomorrow.
thanks again

I suppose that flashing the bios might help somehow but when you've got to the point where you've removed every piece of hardware that came with the hp and you're now trying to destroy every bit of hp software it might be simpler to tell your friend to buy a new computer(sure worked for me).

If you are going to try to flash the bios I should tell you that the mb in that hp is something that is called a "kestral" motherboard. I think it is made especially for hp by asus and I don't now if it has any retail counterpart that you could use the bios from. If you do find some bios that will work then your friend will no longer be able to use his recovery disk either so you might want to double check with him before you take that step.

You also might want to try a format and reinstall of the hp os before you go the extra step.
