Hey, My friend has a dell dimension 8100, a 1.6 and 128MB RDRam (in two 64 sticks), plus a few other ancilliary pci cards. He wanted to upgrade his memory to 256 in 128 sticks. The computer would not boot. He tried with the original sticks, the computer would not boot. He tried taking out all the cards, the computer would not boot. He took out the memory, got beep errors. Took out the video card, no beep errors. The LEDs on his keyboard are not lighting up, and no video is showing. There is power to the mainboard because of the beep error without memory. I tried to clear his bios by taking out the battery for about 10 minutes. I checked the cables cursory, and they seemed ok.

Any ideas?

Are we talking about dual channel RD-RAM here?

And WOW:Q Thats alot of trouble from a simple RAM upgrade. Were you using specified Dell memory from Dell? I know Pc's you buy at the store can be flaky when you use normal hardware inside.

I am not sure of that. He did try some 'higher' quality ram from kingston to try, but those did not work. I believe the chipset is single channel, but still requires the two banks because it is seriel? does this make sense? if it doesn't, then my logic is wrong. He said the computer was about 2 years old. We tried the old ram that came with the Dell, and it was a no-go.

Double-check that you have your CRIMMs (the non-memory placeholder things) fully engaged in their slots, and make sure the new (or old) RDRAM is in the slots the correct direction and all the way in, not tilted or halfway or backwards. Good luck! And if you haven't discovered it already, you should be able to flip the power supply up out of the way so you can work on the RAM more easily.

It is a dual channel i850 Pentium4 chipset. My friend has a 8100, and those are rather picky about memory type. For the pair of 128s, they need to be exactly the same model number. you also have to make sure they are matched in the proper channel (memory bank).

p4 chipset running RDRAM are all dual channel. they also require crimms to be in the empty slots otherwise they wont work. You also need to be sure the memory modules are of the same size

Yea, he already tried moving around the blanks in the other two slots, all to no avail. Any more suggestions?
