Friend's Dell 600m died 12 days after warranty expired

So my friend's Dell 600m died 12 days after warranty expired. Plugged into the wall with battery inserted, no power, plugged into the wall without battery, no power,

not plugged into the wall, no power.
Any idea what it is? Dell wants 700 bucks for a new motherboard.

Or are there places that he can take to get this fixed besides dell?

had that happen to my uncle's Sony, opened it up, found that the power connector was loose (battery charge had gone to zero, couldnt charge, plug into wall gave no power), tightened it, rebooted, recharged battery, was done. If you feel comfortable openening it up, check for a loose connection. You could also bring it to a compusa/bestbuy... and have someone there look at it, though they will charge a fair amount and may have nothing more then an a+ certification (if even that).

what did the power connector look like? on the slim chance that this could be the same problem and that the parts look similar

dont exactly remember what it looked like, just look where the ac adapter plugs into the machine, follow that connection, see if it is loose.

the adapter led shuts off when i plug it into the ac port. I have 2 adapters. they both do this, so i'm pretty sure its not a problem with the adapter.

almost definitely a loose connection on the ac port, have you opened it up and tried to tighten/fiddle with it?

how is it going with the laptop? i had a compaq that had terrrible soldering done. it broke and made no contact. maybe also check to see if the cpu is seated properly and the CMOS battery has good charge. keep this post updated.

Ahh, the beauty of the extended warrenty 😉 3 years was something like 200 bucks for my dads laptop. Could have helped him in this situation
