Friend's CPU in a soup...

No, I haven't done anything.

My friend has a A64 3200 Venice + Asus A8N E Bios 1008

His PC doesn't go beyond 220, even at 1.45V it doesn't do 225. I am talking of multiplier 10x, RAM at 2.6V, PCI E 100MHz, PCI 33.33MHz, he is using mem divider 333, tried RAM 2T and 1T. But it just doesn't go beyond it. Even BIOS update is not possible, as he probably gets a problem even in that.

What can be the reason?

shut up, and tell me what could be wrong with his setup, AFAIK this problem is due to unlocked PCI buses, but with a s939 mobo, they are supposed to be locked be default, what could it be?

Aww, i thought you had dropped a CPU in soup and were asking for help.... That woulda been funny.

Maybe the chips a dud overclocker? It happens... no o/c is a guarantee! That rhymes. How far does the comp get when overclocked? No post? Wont boot into windows?

I'd tell you what could be wrong, but you told us to shut up

please help.

I am sure that 2.2 is not his limit.

It goes 2.2 at 1.4V and is just fine atleast for booting and Super Pi 1M test. But the moment it goes to 221 or 2.21GHz, the comp hangs/stops through booting , no XP/Vista for him. It doesn't help to raise the voltage by even 0.5V for a 5MHz increment. If it was a bad CPU it won't do 2.2 @ 1.4V just fine and not do 2.21 for more volts.

I think you should send him to your OCing blog, akshayt. Like you've already said, you know alot more about OCing than we do.

I never said I know a lot more. I said I had mastered noob overclocking.

Besides, this is nothing noobish, there is a serious reason behind this and something else is causing the trouble, since it is an unusual issue I have no idea whta to do.

I advised him to upgrade his BIOS but he is having a problem even doing that.

What should be done?

BIOS could definately be a problem.
My MSI K8N had issues with one BIOS and getting over 240MHz FSB, would not do it at all.
Other BIOS versions would go 260MHz and up without any issues.

Are you overclocking from bios? Or with a window utility like clockgen?

The reason I asked is the A8N series of boards has an unusual quirk, if you boot up at stock speeds and overclock in windows the PCI bus is unlocked. To solve this if you want to O/C in windows, you set HTT to 201 or higher in bios then boot up to windows and overclock and the PCI bus is locked.

no, a 7600GT.

Besides, my winchester even did 2.3 on stock volts and I am on 2.4 at 1.45V. I was able to reaech upto 2.54GHz atleast b maxing the volts, 1.55 in the BIOS and aroud 1.57-1.58 was shown in CPU Z.

smartass answer: you need to make his CPU cold with solution! motherboard too!

serious answer: try OCing your cpu in his mobo, and his CPU in your mobo. probably his mobo or ram is the problem

im sure ull find ur way with all these ppl helping u.......................i jsut got a budget system up and running and found out my msi neo4 platinum has a problem in the bios running winnie's so i have to use clockgen to overclock. give it a try.

Yes, but A8N E has no problem with winchesters and I haven't heard any complaints with Venice either. A8N E is a pretty popular board and venice a popular chip, he has a venice. I will advise him to upgrade his BIOS again/

anyway why is your 1900xt and1800xt on sale?
