Friends computer stutering

My friends computer stutters, he can just be sitting on the comp typing in im or just typing something and the comp will freeze for 10 sec - 1min. He has reformatted the computer and it still happens. The comp stutters in games as well. Anyone have any idea what this problem could be?
 
Bring up the task manager and take a look at how much free physical memory he has. (Ctrl+Alt+Del brings up the task manager in XP, or a window where you can select task manager in 2k)
Sounds like he may have a bunch of crap running in the background and not enough RAM forcing the computer to use virtual memory all the time. If you could give us some specs on his computer, that would be helpful in suggesting a course of action.
 
does he have a asus motherboard with a panel set to auto update? if so thats the problem, if not keep trying..........
