"C:\WINDOWS\System32\r?gsvr32.exe" doesn't sound right...it may be one of your problems here.

Um, what I can suggest is booting into safe mode and logging into the hidden administrator account in Windows. From there, run your spyware software, virus scanner, etc.

The worst part is, I can delete the start page, etc. stuff, and within 20 seconds, MS Anti spyware pops up and says it's blocking a change to the start page. Doesn't really block it though, when I re-run Hijack this it's changed back to being screwed up.

Well, it's obviously some sort of spyware or trojan buried in your memory somewhere. As long as it's running, changing your start page in IE won't get you anywhere. You have to delete that file, and all of it's corresponding registry keys to actually remove it.

Just try what I suggested above.

poster, is the computer protected by a router where you're working on the computer? I'm asking to find out whether you can safely operate in Safe Mode With Networking or not.

Make sure you disable system restore before trying a major cleanup. Otherwise, the nasties are reloaded when you reboot.

Make sure you disable system restore before trying a major cleanup. Otherwise, the nasties are reloaded when you reboot.

Not necessarily. System restore folders are just another hiding place that spyware uses like the recycling bin and temp folder. Any good spyware cleaner will remove them - even from the restore folder.

YOU DO want to disable and then re-enable System Restore AFTER the system is cleaned of spyware in order to delete the old restore points, because if you use System Restore to go back to a time before you did the spyware cleaning (like maybe a week from now something happens and you need to roll back to an earlier restore point) then any spyware that was installed at that time will be back exactly where it was.

I do mention this as the last step in my spyware removal procedure that I provided a link for above.

The reason I never do this BEFORE doing a spyware cleaning on client's system is because it's very possible to damage the registry, the TCP/IP stack or core OS files while performing a spyware removal (been there, done that, bought the T-shirt!) and you want to be able to use system restore to put the OS back the way it was (yes, infected, but at least functional) before you started if something goes terribly wrong.

If it's a mission critical system, I also make a Ghost image of the drive before I start. I NEVER want to be in a situation where I have to tell a client I trashed their OS.

Hope this helps...
