Friend's computer running really slow.

Friend complained his computer is running really slow. Opening Resource Monitor and looking at the Disk object, shows approx 1MB/sec.

Installing HDTune, and running a benchmark, shows a max of 14.6MB/s.

OS is Windows 7 32-bit. Disk is a Seagate 1TB, probably three years old by now, or approaching that.

SMART data shows Attribute B8 with a raw value of 8, and "failed".

Edit: I shut it down, unplugged the SATA cable from the HDD, and plugged it back in and turned it on.

It booted fairly quickly, and I started HDTune's benchmark before the AV software had finished kicking in, and it showed 122MB/sec.

But then after the AV software finished loading, it went down to 3MB/sec. Friend has both Norton 360 and AVG installed. Currently uninstalling AVG.

Maybe the cache RAM on the hard drive went/is going bad.

I have a 1TB Seagate in my server now. Probably 2 years old. Been a good drive, but I usually prefer WD. Newegg had a good price on it at the time.

Well, uninstalled AVG Free, and now HDTune is benchmarking the entire HDD at around 120MB/sec.

How bizarre. Now I have to try to clean off "Conduit".

Not bizarre at all. Having two anti-virus programs running at the same time will bog down your system. You would have gotten the same results if you uninstalled Norton. Probably better actually 🙂
