Friend's computer making non-stop short beeps at bootup.

I've tried clearing the CMOS. I took the battery out for a couple of minutes, but it didn't change a thing. Also messed with the jumper next to it. Also tried different memory.

Any help?

Did you EXACTLY follow the motherboard manual's instructions for resetting the CMOS ?

If not, you may have damaged the motherboard and/or the CMOS chip.

Try going into BIOS and setting parameters back to the factory defaults, then save and exit and see if it will reboot.

Good luck.

a) The beep codes should be explained in the motherboard manual. The pattern of beeps usually tell you what the computer does or does not recognize as being present. If you don't have the manual, the mobo companies usually have them online.

b) try the clear cmos tango again, because you didn't do it long enough:

1) power off,
2) physically actually unplug power cable,
3) press power-on button a couple times to help discharge capacitor charge,
4) pop out cmos button battery,
5) move cmos jumper to "clear"
6) let it sit a lot lot longer time than "for a couple of minutes." I say leave the battery out & the jumper set to clear position overnight (this is much longer than anyone else thinks necessary, but I do based on an experience),
7) next day put cmos jumper back to "normal" position,
8) put button battery back in, boot up while continuously holding down whichever key lets you enter BIOS on that particular mobo
8) that should get you into bios, where you should then load & save default settings then reboot normally.
