Friends computer keeps saying, invalid system disk???

Bascially, my friend left his computer idle for a while returned and started his comp back up to only get this error upon bootup. invalid system disk??? The problem is there is no disk in the drive! We unplugged it and same thing. Whats going on. Also if i reformat his comp is there a special way to set everything up with have to even put in a floppy drive? Could we just leave it out and install everything like usual

If you do decide to reformat, you should be able to just not put a floppy drive in there and be fine. Some computers these days don't come with floppy drives, but it's always nice to have one for those rare moments....
