His mobo and stuff are gone... He is now trying to transfer his stuff from the old ATA-HDD to his new computer. This is where the problem comes in, his new comp is SATA, so he bought an IDE add-on card...tries to boot up and the comp just restarts. I think it has to do with the hardware differences between his old and new machine. He is trying to salvage documents and stuff from the PATA drive, but it has several admin accounts on it. How can he boot up and get his stuff?

Edit: update. He told me that he did get to the windows boot screen and then it restarts, then he booted using BOOT LOG, and a certain dll wont load, he didnt write the name down

how ironic, we had a terrible storm last night.

Yeah, that is actually why I asked... We had a bad storm last night and I was just curios, because we had a lot of destruction in the northern part of the twin cities... Parts of the city do not have power and will not for a few more days... Live power lines flashing like snakes etc... Pretty crazy stuff.

He says it will boot to the sata, but not the old IDE, he tried changing the boot order with the sata installed but the same thing happens.

You will not be able to boot to the old drive unless the new mobo and CPU are exactly the same as the old one.He will have to either boot to SATA drive with the IDE as slave and copy his old data off(my recomendation) or do a repair install on the old drive.

Boot from the SATA and copy the files that are needed. And just out of curiosity what mobo doesn't have a PATA controller? Must be an mATX?
