My friends car was stolen last night in Hayward, CA. He immediately called the cops and they were able to locate the driver and began to chase him. The driver was running red lights and weaving between cars, because of this, the cops decided to call off the chase because it was getting too dangerous. My friends car is a 2000 something Honda Civic, blue book is $3000-$4000. I understand that car or any car for that matter is not worth an innocent bystander being injured or killed over but at the same time there is part of me that thinks this is total bs. Now the guys who stole his car are just going to go out there and steal more and more cars.

If it was here in LA, they would chase him forever but yes, laws now-a-days they have to be very careful. They have to go through all these hoops to even do a P.I.T. manuver now.

they dont get revenue from chasing a robber
more money from issuing speeding tickets and parking citations

It's worth $4000, so what? Cops made the right decision.

It's your friend's fault for owning a Honda in California.

There's no one size fit's all solution to this I feel. I don't know how hard and fast rules regarding this can even be determined.

One thing's for sure, if the bad guys know they're not going to be pursued, it makes it just that much easier for them.

So its ok for them to steel a $4000 car? At what dollar value does it become not ok?

pretty lame that the cops couldn't get a helicopter to follow or something. but recently here two innocent kids got ran over by a stolen car in philly. people were complaining that the cops should have called off the chase... it goes both ways. just collect the insurance money and get antoher car.

It is total BS probably. The cops probably didn't want to give up pursuit but now cities have to worry about the pocketbooks more than catching the crook because some liberal idiots got all sue happy over and over. That and the bad guy hitting innocents is no fun, I think there should be a apache attach helicopter for these type of situations.

Even though your friends car would be destroyed at least he could collect insurance and have the gun cam footage. :p

Hayward is the HOOD! Too close to N. Oakland.

Owning a car that is easily stolen in a bad neighborhhod is an invite to having it stolen. It will most likely be found in good confdition as most cars stolen in the bay area are just used for transporting the person who stole the car to where they needed to go.

Screwdriver in the door lock and then a broken steering column with the same screwdriver is all it takes. About 30-seconds.

I looked up the population for Hayward, CA and it's tiny so they probably don't even have a chopper.

It's just a car that insurance will cover. Definitely not worth injuring or killing innocents over. This, while it sucks because no justice will be done here, is probably the right call on the part of the police.

Where did I say it was ok? Did he have full coverage? If no, see my original post point #2, I will reiterate with an adendum:

It's your friend's fault for owning a Honda while living in california and not having theft insurance.

Do you want me to spell it out any further? No life is worth a piece of metal. Whether it's a 70's Honda or a show room ferrari.

For those who say just let insurance cover it, is it common for people with $4000 cars to have full coverage? Because I know I don't.
