My friend's computer blew up, literally! He called me and said that his PSU started smoking and made some crackling noises when he tried turning it on. So I took his PC and was trying to figure out what's wrong. Firstly, his PSU is dead, because I replaced it with one of mine and it gives off power to the case. Next, I tried putting his HD in my PC and it wouldn't boot. Could the HD be dead? When I gave his my PSU, the CPU fan turned on, the case lights went on, the floppy and CDROM lights went on. But nothing booted up, I couldn't even hear anything turn on. What do you think is wrong? Could the PSU, HD, *AND* CPU or mobo be dead? I'm sure the PSU and HD are dead, but why when I replaced the PSU won't it turn on? Any ideas?

There's BIG chance that the MB or even the CPU is gone with the wind (or the blow, hehehe...)
You can take the component out and plug them in your PC to check (HDD, Sound card, video card, etc.)

QTPie is right. Standard procedure for non-booting systems. Unplug everything from the mobo except your cpu, 1 stick o' RAM, and your vid card. No sound card, IDE cables, mouse, keyboard, nothing! Just the cpu, memory and vid. See what happens. Also, listen to your beep codes. What mobo you got?

He has the Soyo SY-5SSM and an AMD K6-2 processor. When I tried turning it on, there was NO BEEPS at all...

So you did like we suggested and removed EVERYTHING except the cpu, 1 stick o' RAM and vid? Still no boot? Well, that really limits the possibility, huh? You have either a bad cpu, bad mobo, bad psu, bad memory, or bad vid card. You can try swapping these few parts with another pc until you find the culprit.
