Hmm by over over clocked he could of damaged the chip.

Did he try unlocking the extra pipelines?

If the extra pipes did not unlock then the card is not damaged, just need to uncheck the extra pipes and it will fix it.

It mostly depends on what he tried to do to overclock it. If he cranked the multiplier too high there is a chance he damaged the chip, but again, it depends on what he did.

Well usually artifacts show up when the card is over heating so his overclocking is most likely the problem. Tell him to turn it down a bit to where the artifacts dont show up anymore but he still gets optimal performance. If the artifacts are always there then I don't know what to say other than I think he messed up his chip.

Reset the bios to factory defaults and see if it still does this. Make sure he didn't do something stupid like write the wrong bios to the card.

its definetely overheating then....tell him to check if the fan is functioning properly...remove the card from the case, clean any dust if there is any!! make sure it is properly fitted onto the card as well. tell him to make sure that the airflow in the case is also as good as possible....he may have to change the fan for that card.

sounds like bad RAM on the video card. Atleast thats ussually what it is if it gets random characters in the BIOS.
