Friend went and bought a Rent to Own PC

I know they are TOTAL ripoffs and I would NEVER EVER buy one myself BUT

I just had a friend who did. If I had extra pc's sitting around I would lend
him one or build one and let him pay me later but I don't. His apt got broke
into and he thinks its his only choice since he doesn't have any credit and
needs a computer for his classes, etc.

Is there anything better I can try talking him into? I hate to see
him toss his $$ away.

I'll build him an okay one for $400 if he's got a monitor...if not, I could still build it for $400 but it'll be sh!tty.

well he works for walmart and he works for his apt complex. but not full time
as he goes to college as well. right now I am in no position to lend him mine
or take money out of my account to build him one or I would. I guess he will
just have to learn how much of a rip-off them places really are.

I didn't know if there was companys out there who provide a similar service
as the rent to own places but don't charge the crazy amount of intrest.

oh geesh. hope he likes paying 5k for a $600 computer.

my sister bought a DVD player through rent-a-center. her payments were $12 a week for a year. that crappy dvd player came out ot be like $600. granted this was when DVD players were still over $100 for the crappy ones.

jmoe782 there are several places on the 'net he can get a refurbed PC for next to nothing. Granted these are not going to play the latest and greatest games or be the envy of his neighbors but they will suffice for school work.

Here are a couple of such sites:

the whole concept of renting a PC is just wrong...unless its some sort of a 6 month lease deal whereby you get a brand-new kickass PC with all the latest hardware for like $30/month (and they give you some special software wizard that lets you put your same hard disk in a new machine without reinstalling software all the time....

Thanks for the links. Never heard of some of those places. I'm gonna tell him
about these places or I'll offer to build him one again for $300 or so. Or he
can just enjoy paying 5k for a $600 computer. He doesn't really play any of
the latest games. Just schoolwork, browsing, and chatting. Really a 700mhz
pc can do all the pretty easily.
