My friend uses MS outlook and has set up both his school and personal e-mail to be retreived by the program. He sends out e-mail to professors, employers, and business contacts with his Berkeley account and uses the personal one for registration purposes (to avoid spam). Despite being a quality institute of higher education, UC Berkeley's outgoing mail server some times experiences down time due to server maintanence or overwhelming volumes of e-mail.

So last night my friend receives and e-mail from his former internship boss addressed to his personal account. He quickly realizes that when the school send server is down sent mail is automatically sent via his secondary account...

See his panic and outrage as he desparately searches for a solution in this thread

The kicker?
His secondary e-mail address handle is EF-YoMama@domain.com

Alkesh: oh and btw

Alkesh: i found out last night
Alkesh: then whenever the calmail outgoing server goes down

Alkesh: outlook automatically sends the e-mail via my comast address
AE: lol
AE: so?
Alkesh: EF-YoMama@domain.com

Please spare us the kiddie drama. I don't care who is in your homeroom, and I don't care what your friends at college do.

Oh yes Bill Gates was in the meeting when the developers where discussing the default rules for outgoing mail if one STMP server is down on a dual account setup. 😕

Tell your friend to use Thunderbird. In Thunderbird, you only specify one SMTP server, no matter how many IMAP servers you have. You only send mail through that SMTP server. Hence, you will not encounter the problem your friend described.

Yeah, but then his friend will start to smell bad, grow shaggy, pathetic facial hair, and dress solely in white T-shirt stained with Mountain Dew and Cheetos.
