hahahaha. what a perfect topic for ATOT.

His wife is pregnant with their 2nd child and so he decided to get a larger vehicle, he currently drives an older Volvo.

so he went out and bought an SUV. Acura MDX (?) to be exact. He started off looking at minivans but ended up w/ an SUV.

In the end he said it was between the Honda Pilot and the Acura MDX. he ended up with the Acura, he didn't want to wait for the Pilot.

What i find amazing is, people buy $38k cars these days as if it were the norm.

that used to be a lot of money.

It still is a lot of money, but some people have no problems living under huge piles of debt.

No problems until something bad happens.

Of course then it is everyones fault but their own.

People used to not be in debt a long time ago either. It's just a matter of putting it on credit and worrying about it later. House mortgage, multiple car payments with the minimum down and skyhigh interest rate, still paying off school loans 10 years later, etc.

Paid for with cash, mofo!

Your friend made an excellent choice, though truth be told I think the Pilot is better bang for the buck (if you can live with the bland styling!) Even though it seems pricey, the MDX is actually better-priced than most of its inferior competition,

actually, he used the same words, "bang for the buck". but there was a waiting list for the pilot and he didn't feel like waiting for it.

Durango, Expedition, Excursion, Larger Blazer (forgot the model designation)

sure there are a lot of SUV's that handle 7 people, but they are soo much bigger exterior than the minivan.

the Windstar is basically the same length and width (externally) as my Intrigue. Those SUV's are a lot bigger.

well LeeTJ, the chevy "trailblazer" isn't really like an suv... I mean it can haul 7 people, but it isn't up to today's standards of bigger suv's having v8's or even larger motors in them...

Hell if I remember correctly, a trailblazer is only a 4.2 liter v6...

38k isn't that much. Anyways, you can get really good interest rates. If you have to make an investment in assets like that, now is as good as it is going to get.

I wish I had a supportive friend like you

what's really funny is any old volvo wagon has tons more usable space and can even have more seating positions than the MDX. tell me again why he thought this was an upgrade?

$38k still is a lot of money.

The most I'd ever pay is $35k for a loaded Lexus ES300.

If I were to buy an SUV right now it'd be the Honda Pilot.

Where in this whole thread did i say I didn't support him?? I clearly posted earlier "he looked at minivans he choose an SUV. his choice. With 2 kids, it's a wash. I have 3 kids, an SUV was not an option for me."

Where did i NOT support him??

Thomsbrain, he has an old Volvo Sedan, not wagon.

The Trailblazer EXT is the seven passenger version. You can get the 290hp v8 as an option on the EXT. The 4.2 liter engine is a straight 6 that's provides plenty of power.

The TrailBlazer's standard 4.2-liter inline six puts out 275 horsepower (up from last year's 270) and 275 lb-ft of twist. That's more power than most of its competitors' V8s, allowing the TrailBlazer to tow 6,400 pounds (on properly equipped two-wheel-drive models). New for this year, the TrailBlazer EXT offers an optional Vortec 5.3-liter V8 that kicks out 290 hp and 325 lb-ft or torque, giving it the capacity to tow up to 7,200 pounds when properly equipped.

You're confusing "mid size SUVs" with "non SUVs".
