Friend needs USED laptop

my friend needs a new laptop...something cheap. he said he needs something under $300 but the way he was talking, i think he can go to $350. he's starting his 3rd year in college. his only use is probably going to be just for school.

he found 2 laptops in his price range on craiglist (San Francisco Bay Area, California)...one was an IBM T40 and the other an X31 (i think). priced similar but the X31 doesn't have an optical drive.

BTW, i forgot to mention he'd prefer something light and reliable.

any other things he could be looking at?
 
How fast is he looking for?

I got my Thinkpad X22 from ebay over a year ago and it was $300. It was only 800mhz. It's expensive for it's age, but ultraportable and speedy for my purposes. If he's just going to web browse, write papers and check email then he doesn't need anything faster.

Whatever he gets, an upgrade to a faster harddrive and more ram can make a lot of difference if it seems too slow. By default $300 laptop probably will have little ram and slow drive.
 
yea i think he's leaning towards something portable vs powerful. i mean he isn't looking at last year's thinkpads 😛
