First off, here is his current rig:

AMD64 3000+
2gb's ddr400
7600gt
asus mobo
stock psu

He wants to boost this a little, and his budget is around 300 bucks

I would say get an x2, and upgrade psu and videocard?

The system is most definately used for gaming. He has a 20' 16x12 res samsung monitor that he uses. The stock psu is some 350 trash psu that came with the case (enermax) and its not enermax brand...

I have been pushing him to get a better psu, I don't wana see his system fail because of that.

I was thinking thermaltake 430watt, x2 3800 o/c, and 8600gt?

Update:

Put together a newegg shopping cart, and I came up with this

MSI NX8600GTS-T2D256E-OC GeForce 8600GTS 256MB 128-bit GDDR3 PCI Express x16 HDCP Ready SLI Supported Video Card - Retail

SeaSonic S12 II SS-330GB ATX12V 330W Power Supply - Retail

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+ Toledo 2.2GHz Socket 939 Processor Model ADA4200DAA5CD - OEM

That comes out to $293

any suggestions?

honestly...get a decent psu and an 8800GT, and overclock that cpu to 2.5Ghz or something. that'll hold him for a while (and thats what im doing, yet it plays crysis just fine on medium 1920x1200).
