Friend lost Passport, Social Security Card, and OPT Card - Risks?

I've got a friend who's here on a work Visa. She, for reasons I can't comprehend, entrusted her passport, her social security card, and her Optional Practical Training (OPT) card to her new boyfriend of 2 weeks. Her boyfriend *said* he put these items into an old suitcase of his, along with his own visa, passport, and cash.

A week or so later he's cleaning his house and says that he accidentally threw away this old dilapidated suitcase. And so the documents were lost. Supposedly his documents and cash were lost too and he even cried when he told me friend what he had done.

My friend doesn't know whether to trust this guy's story or not. Say that he decided to just steal these documents - what kind of damage can he do with these?

This guy is a 23 year old Chinese person, been her 2 years, doesn't speak very good English, has a mom in the states, has a dad in China who he's trying to sponsor to come over to the states, and he has a green card.

My friend is just a 25 year old Chinese girl here on a work visa. She just graduated with an MBA degree from Toledo.

He must be very good looking and has a really big cock for her to fall for him. Either that, or your friend's not very bright. MBA degree, kek.

You need to sell the rights to your life to Hollywood. I'm dead serious. I'd implode if my life contained half the drama that inflicts yours.

The boyfriend could sell those docs for big money. Your friend may soon lose her identity or have a whole lot of debt charged to her.

Ug, don't get me started. She has led a very sheltered life growing up in China. Super innocent and inexperienced. Not street smart.

What's done is done. She wants to know whether she can continue to trust this person and what kind of angle he could be playing if he did indeed steal these documents. What could he gain? Motive?

Or maybe he just made a really really really really stupid mistake by throwing out all of his and her's important documents during house cleaning, a week or so after putting them in that suitcase. To my friend and I, the story just seems unbelievably stupid. Which is why we wonder if he's actually playing her.

They're both super Chinese, and after knowing each other for a month, the guy has even brought up marriage.

FBB - OMG HIS LIFE IS OVER OMGOMGOMGOMGOMG!!OMFIDNASDFNASFDMADFK

Seriously, get outside and see the sunshine.

Why would he ask for those documents? Then put them in a suitcase with his? Then throw it away?

Sounds like this guy found himself an easy victim.

If you can, you may want to talk to the police.

I always feel naked when I leave home without my Optional Practical Training card. Some things are more important to have than a cell phone!

Can you say bullshit?

This guy's a liar through and through, he's gonna go rack up a ton of debt under her name and conveniently blame it on identity fraud because he supposedly "lost" the documents.

Threaten legal action and I bet the documents will be magically found.

Marriage? Yea, this guy is definitely a grifter, either that or a pimp.

Does she have some money? Rich parents maybe? This guys a gold digger, stay clear.

Tell her not to worry, she'll be safe and can live with you in a shed. You guys can snorgle together with bun bun and all troubles will disappear.

Uhhh...what legal action could she threaten?

Best thing she can do is contact her embassy and report the documents as missing. The governments can then flag said documents and hopefully get her new ones.

doesn't matter, just make it sound threatening, call the cops if you have to, this guy doesn't sound too bright, and speaks little English, chances are he'll just "find" the documents to avoid potential trouble.

He's going to get some good $$$ for those docs.

Tell her to get her ass to the embassy or consulate, report the passport stolen (NOT THAT SHE GAVE THE PASSPORT TO SOMEBODY ELSE - VERY IMPORTANT), and get new passport.

She needs credit protection as well if that was a US social security card. With the passport and SS card, somebody is going to be opening bank accounts and applying for credit left and right.

She will also want to file a police report so she has a record of the documents being stolen if it ever comes back to bite her in the ass (with regards to credit, Immigration, DHS, etc.)

Pics?

Why would her documents even come up in a conversation?
How could she possibly be stupid enough to hand them over to some guy she just met? Why are you now involved in this?
I'd say most of the story is missing, or you're the one who's about to get scammed.
If it is just as you say, tell your friend to go back to china, she's too stupid to survive in the US.

If this guy is a scam artist, can't they contact the authorities?

Yeah, I'll tell her to say the passport was stolen.

How does one go about getting credit protection? She's never owned a credit card and doesn't have any credit. I would bet that if she were to get a credit card it would have a measly $500 limit.

Police report - got it.

The thing I don't get is, if you're going to steal important documents like this, why steal them from a Chinese person on a work visa with no credit working a low paying part time job?

As to the police report - she doesn't know for a fact that they were stolen. What should she tell the police? This is still her "boyfriend" and I'd suspect she's not going to want to tell the police that he stole them.

/facepalm

Are you this naive?

Contact all three credit bureaus and report possible identify theft and request a fraud alert to be placed on her SS#. If anyone tries to open credit against it, she will be contacted to verify.

Why steal the documents? To sell to an illegal immigrant, replace picture and she is now your friend. Or open credit and charge it against your friend. You do know what identity theft is, right?

Tell the police that you believe your friend may have been scammed. Even my 70 year old mother was telling me about scams going on in SF recently where chinese have befriending older chinese women to steal from them.

This guy will probably start asking her for money now since he lost his.
