A friend of mine is paying a Life Coach $500/month to help him determine and achieve personal goals. Personally, I'm sure if he used a bit of common sense, he could set his own goals and achieve them himself, but to each their own. Anyone have any experience with Life Coaching? Is he getting ripped off?

yeah, hes paying someone to be an encouraging friend.

maybe if you didnt fail so bad as a friend he wouldnt have had to take such a drastic step.

How long has he been paying this person? I would think you'd only need a couple months to formulate a plan and start executing it. After that he needs an accountability partner, a role that a good friend can fill for free.

Interesting...

Just wondering. How much does your friend make per month? Is $500/m 2% of his/her income?

Dang. $500/m is alot of money. Couldn't imagine myself paying that much for gym membership. Let alone a "Life Coach."

If he could afford it, more power to him. I guess. I'm not one to ever tell anyone how to spend their money. But if it improves him. Oh well.

he would achieve more by donating the 500 a month to food bank.

He probably makes around $80k or so. It's his first month and he called me up randomly a couple days ago during a coaching session to have me tell him what are some positive things I notice about his personality when we go out... I was a bit groggy and still sick so couldn't think of much lol.. I felt bad but decided to call him the day after to explain.

OK, it's his first month. A month (maybe two) more, I would expect to see a plan in place and at that point I would think he could just follow the plan without the ongoing need for the coach. If he feels he needs the coach longer, then that's the right choice for him.

no experience with life coaching, but I suppose there's a reason why some people would pay money for things like that *shrug*.

the process was a little lengthy and more complicated, but for me the idea of what I loved to do basically boiled down to the following:

-What did I enjoy doing?
-What work would I love to do even if it was unpaid?

granted it takes a level of honesty, observation, and introspection to do, so I'm not surprised that your friend would ask about his personality.

Might be cheaper to just join a religion and let God tell you what to do.

What's the bet that one of his new life goals won't be "save money, by not spending it on unnecessary crap"

What a scam. He'd be better off getting some hookers and blow.

Nothing wrong with having a life coach. If you wanted to get better at training, you would hire a personal trainer, if you wanted to get better at basketball, you would probably hire someone.

Nothing different here. He's not getting ripped off if he thinks his services are worth $500 monthly.

$500 is a bit steep.

either way, most of us don't need a life coach to fix our lives for us. however, there are some that really do need it. some people have SOOO little discipline and have no idea how to keep themselves motivated and on track that they just need someone who isn't a friend to get them to where they need to be.

it's kinda like having a personal trainer, except for life rather than fitness.

Not at 10% tithe.

OP, I've seen this go both ways. I am sure plenty of people are complete crocks and a rip off but I was a manny (man nanny) for a semester in college for a woman who was a life coach/business coach. I can tell you that if I got 5-10 hours a month with her for $500 I would do it in a second. Her insight into personal and business decisions and progress was outstanding. I promise she would make you a happier person and more successful in your career. She incorporated communication training in her coaching as well.

So who knows, you're friend might be making incredibly positive steps with this person. I'd say ask him in 4-6 months.

The life coaches I have seen in the Bay Area are pretty fine looking ladies ... $500 is cheap
