So I have a shuttle XPC SK83G. When its turned off, all the lights are off (including the mouse laser and keyboard leds for capslock, etc).

My friend comes over, and says "hey, thats weird, because when my computer is off (he also has an XPC, but a different one), the mouse laser AND the keyboard leds stay on". I say "thats rubbish. I've owned more than 7 computers over 6 years, and used tens more. I've never seen that happen". And that night, when I shut down my pc, the keyboard light AND the mouse laser stay on. BOTH. It freaked me out. I had bought a new mouse that day, a logitech mx510. Does anyone else with this mouse have this issue? And I had also upgraded my video card from a Ti4200 to a 9600XT. But I dont see why that would make my keyboard LED stay lit when the computer is off.

That often depends on whether or not your USB ports are set up to draw power from the +5VSB (standby) power, or the normal +5V line. Even when the ATX PSU is "off", it is still supplying power via the +5VSB. Most mobos that support "power on via keyboard/mouse/USB" will use the +5VSB line. However that line doesn't supply a lot of power. On some mobos that is switchable via an actual jumper on the board, and on others, it is controlled via some setting in the BIOS settings. It may also depend on which USB port the device is plugged into. I'm not familiar enough with that mobo to specifically say, just giving the general overview on how it usually works. (That's also the reason why you should always unplug the power when working on an ATX system, some mobos supply standby power to the PCI and DIMM slots too, and you could fry your system if you don't unplug it to kill the power completely.)

Interesting. But my question is, why did it start doing it all of a sudden? I didn't change the motherboard OR the keyboard. It all started after he opened his big mouth and said "mine always stays on".

I think I'll just go kick him in the shins once. That better fix it.

Maybe you never noticed it before your friend brought it up.

Believe it or not the same happens to my sister's computer. Wake-on-lan is off on her computer and I rarely use it (because, yes, it's jinxed too), but sometimes she'd come home and it's on.

She also got hit by lightning years ago, and ever since then, she can drain batteries like a man goes through a six pack, and electrical objects around her also start malfunctioning. I stay away from her computer because it's, to put it lightly, hexed!!

LOL. Interesting that you should say that, my sister has a similar effect on electronics. Her car's speedometer doesn't work right, sometimes it stays at zero. My car never, ever, had that problem. Until I stopped at her place. Then *my* car started doing it too, most of the way home. WTF??? Some things... are just truely too bizarre to attempt to explain.

Unless she has a digital readout on the speedo, then it is a mechanical problem - just replace the cable that goes from the back of the speedo to the gearbox!!!

Sorry - back to pootas now
