Friend is receiving life-threatening emails from what appears to be someone she knows. The only problem is that both addresses are msn accounts. Is there any way to track down IPs?

She called the police & reported to MSN, but neither seem to care. :(

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

MSN the ISP or hotmail? If it's msn it should be sent from a regular email client and somewhat traceable.

Has your friend emailed abuse@msn.com?

Not sure about tracking...but she should definitely change her email and block the sender and no matter what, keep harassing the police about it!

If you know someone with a hosting account somewhere ...

Send a reply email ... attach an image ... look where the image loads from!

Unfortnately, the police will be very unhelpful in this area...even if he were calling you incessantly and emailing you threats. I had a female stalker one time and called the police about it. She would call me all the time, threaten me, ect. The police said they could only help me if I agreed to press charges.

So press charges. It's a frickin' death threat from someone she seems to know. Are you going to wait until he tries to break in and kill her? :|

I believe even in hotmail it sends your ip addresses. Although anybody who is smart would goto the library to send these so its hard to track.

Contact your local FBI Bureau for assistance if the local police will not help.

Thanks for all the help guys - I have webhosting through dixiesys, so I'll try that route... though where in my hosting would I be able to see where an image loads from?

ALso MErc, what's a full header?

Every email has a header. It contains the information on the origin of the email, and what server actually delivered the email. The most important number is the: "X-Originating IP" (At Least in Yahoo! Mail), and that's the IP of the computer that the email came from. But as was stated before, if they are using a public computer, harder to track. And with DHCP these days, a consistent IP Adress is not always guaranteed.
