HI. A friend of mine was attempting to install Windows XP and he ran into a mess of problems. He said that when he went to reformat his HDD (deleting the primary partition and creating a new one) it took forever for his machine to scroll through the screens. When he finally did reformat it and install Windows 98 se, the system froze about 65% into the installation. I know that this could be main memory MB or even HDD. He told me that his machine was working fine before he decided to install windows xp and reformat his hdd. ANy help would be great.

We may need more detail on exactly what steps he took to get to that point in the setup.

From what you posted so far, I am assuming he:

Booted from a Windows 98 system floppy?

Went into FDISK and deleted the old Windows XP partition, creating a new partition for 98se?

Reformatted the partition?

Rebooted the system to start the install of 98?

Did he boot from the Win98 CD to do the install?

When he FDISKed the system, did he do an FDISK /MBR?

Is it freezing 65% into copying the initial setup files, or 65% thru with the setup after the second boot (when setup
goes to the GUI based install?).
