Friend having problem with Optical device drivers, PLEASE HELP!

Hey, I just built a new system for a friend a few months ago:
PIII-733
MSI i815EP Motherboard
Radeon LE
Maxtor 30GB HDD ATA100
Panasonic 48X CD-ROM (IDE)
Ricoh 8x4x32 CD-RW (IDE)

That's pretty much the setup. Things were working okay in Win98SE, but my friend complained about too many crashes - so we switched to a Win2K platform. I revamped the boot partition on the HDD, installed Win2K - setup devices etc. Finished everything in about 2 hours, was working great, and then I went home. Now my friend calls me back 2 days later, and says that the CD-ROM and CD-RW aren't detected properly in Win2K. He goes to device manager and both these optical drives have that exclaimation mark saying 'Windows cannot load the driver for this device'. We've reinstalled the drivers but it still doesn't work. What I don't understand is why would the drivers work fine 1 day (and still after about 5 reboots just to test the machine), yet fail to work 2 days later?

Any ideas on this would be appreciated.

EDIT: There isn't a chance that the optical drive is damaged somehow? Or actually the IDE channel is not working properly? What I don't understand is that it was working, and now it's not - doesn't quite make sense.

Thanks!

Switch the IDE cables around and make sure that the drives aren't set at one being Cable Select and the other at Slave or something weird like that. Make sure one is set at Master and the other is set at Slave. Sorry, that is all i could think of. Good luck!

DAMN! bacillus, I owe you 😉.

Yeah - I had installed EZCD-creator 5, but it conflicted with his Ricoh burner (probably need new firmware) - so I uninstalled it. Just called him and told him the reg fix, everything works. Thanks a million 😉.
