friend has an old laptop with no USB port. Is there anything he can do to connect USB devices?

Yep - that's the way to go - however! If it is too old, it will not have the 32-bit cardbus PCMCIA slot, and you may not be able to find a 16-bit socket services PCMCIA card. Try before buy!

Oh how true. Tried to get a customers usb card working, and found out that this was the problem. We did an extensive search and found no 16 bit cards for USB. It later dawned on me that I had ran into that same problem with a cardbus network card in an old laptop. Definitely check if the laptop is cardbus compatible.

Heheh.. my ThinkPad 380D is a Pentium 150 system without 32 bit PCMCIA cardbus support... 16 bit only.

I ran into this sort of issue when I wanted to plug in my USB key drive... couldn't find a PCMCIA card to do it.
