friend has 600 for a computer

He will be buying from frys.

outpost.com

He cant build, for whatever personal reasons he has.
However I was thinking maybe we could by a lower-end system...and just add a new video card.

Is 600 enough for an o.k retail system?

He will be playing WoW and maybe Everquest 2...and maybe..just maybe..bf2.

update: I realized there are no computers at frys that have a cheap enough barebone that is under 500.

(512 mb of ram etc, 100 gig hd...etc..)

I was looking at this:http://shop2.outpost.com/product/4568597?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
O.k video card, sinces its 256mb it should be able to handle bf2 on low settings right..and WoW and everquest and star wars battle front...etc..

He doesnt need super high settings, just low-medium.

thanks for any advice.

And please dont tell me we should build, he cant buy online and if he bought parts from the frys it would be more expensive then buying parts online.

dont buy that compy. wont handle bf2 at low settings.

bf2 needs a 9700pro at least for recommended settings(800x600 medium or 800x600 high). a x200 is about 1/4 as fast.
BF@ hitches(sorta stutters/locksup) without at least 1gb ram. no less than 1gb of ram or you will suffer mightily. 2gb is ideal but 1gb is passable.

buy a cheap ~450-500 amd64 pc from hp, buy a 9800pro(agp, used ~$90) or x700pro/6600DDR2(pci-e, new ~100) and add ram until it hits 1gb.

video memory dosent mean anything, frequency, pixel pipes, vertex shaders and memory bus width determine how fast it is.

the monitor is ok, not bad espically if you dont pay shipping for it.

Care to point one out?

Im not buying this online, remember that. And 9800 pro is going to cost me at least 140 bucks at a walk in store, im sure I can find the ram though..

Actually that is an ok computer, just add a bit more ram and a video card and you should be good to go.

he cant afford to do that.

only has 600 to spend, 700 tops.

Quick question. Why not buy online? Undoubtedly, you can get more bang for your buck online.

Check out this setup. Swap out the P160 case for an Antec Sonata II w/PSU and delete PSU listed. Add 1 Gb memory. Doesn't have GPU but, leaves enough budget to get decent video card.

Good luck on your quest.
