Friend Found 2 Guns in Lake *with pics*

A friend of mine went scuba diving last week and found two guns in the process. They were about 50 feet under water and about 100-200 feet from the pier in a relatively remote lake in a mountaneous region.

The two guns were a Ruger Mini-14 / Mini-30and a Remington 870 Shotgun and are pretty rusted so it seems as if they were down there for quite some time.

Now seeing that this is a bit peculiar, is there any legal obligation to report them? What would you guys do?

edit: so it's not an assault rifle, thanks for clearing that up.

edit: pic with veronica mars for size comparison

Yes, call the police, and report them. They will log them into NCIC (as found firearms), and see if they were used in a crime.

They really need to be given to the police so that they can run ballistics to see if they were used in a crime, like Chocobo stated.

No ballistics needed. They can pull the serials, run the #'s in NCIC, and see if they were stolen, and then search for crimes in the area which used the same caliber weapon. It's quite amazing how the NCIC network information works...

Actually, I don't watch TV (I actually watch one show, my namesake). I'm TCIC / NCIC full access certified. That's why I know. 🙂

Thats cool, I didn't know that there was a huge database full of firearms 😀

Clean them and keep them. Even if they can't work, they will be cool conversation pieces. Don't call the cops... you'll be sorry. Nothing good ever EVER comes from calling the Man.

Edit: If they are totally rusted, any ballistics test are no good anyway. Plus they can't do ballistics on shotguns.

as troublesome as it sounds... your friend should report it

hopefully they give you some free donuts for it as compensation

If he were to give you the serial #'s, could you run a check?

Just keep them.

Great idea if they were ever found at the OP's house by someone...

Especially if they were used in a crime.

I'd suggest calling up teh proper authorities for sure.

just out of curiosity what is it about the SKS that causes you to refer to it as an "assault" rifle?

Ability to take a magazine with a capacity > 10 rounds.

Good question, but no. By law, I have to have them in my presence to run them. If he keeps them, he could be held liable if they were ever found by the polilce later. If he turns them in now, he can't be held liable (to an extent--I'm sure they would investigate if the weapons were used in a murder).

You can take them to the police, and have them run the weapons. If they were used for something, they will confiscate them. If they weren't, then they will likely return them to you.

Listen to Chocobo, its a win win, if the police don't have a reason for them then why would they keep them? Turn them in so that maybe you can help solve something that lacked this evidence, and if not then you did the right thing and get to keep what you found, worry free. 🙂

Nonsense, do not contact the police.

If they were used for any illegal purpose they are beyond the CSI stage anyway... guns in that condition are next to worthless. Personally, I would throw them back in the lake.

Contacting the police will only end up wasting your friend's time and the cop's time but the cops will be paid for the time and your friend will not.

So serial numbers would do no good in a national database? Do you have any firearms? And if so, do you have the serial numbers written down elsewhere??

Secondly, they are messed up? They won't do his friend any good. And why would someone toss them in the lake in the first place? Obviously that would be a bit suspitious right there.
