Hi all,

A friend of mine wants to transfer some files from his laptop to his new computer he just bought. He connects them with a cable from one network card to the other, but can't they can't see each other in My Network Places. When pinging one from the command prompt, he only gets about two replies on average and the other two time out.

Any suggestions on what to try?

Both Running Windows XP.

Thanks for any input or help.

<< Is the cable he using a crosover cable? If not he'll need one or a hub/switch. Its prolly a straight one. >>

It is just the network cable he was using to connect to the school internet access. This won't work?

If its a rj45 cable it has to be crossed over in order to connect 2 computers without a hub or switch. The rj45 looks like a large phone jack.

How did he connect at school? Through an external box or dirctly into a computer? If he connect to a external box it is straight cable, it will not work. A crossover cable is needed.
