I checked both the wired and wireless connections. Renewed ip. Network status says connected and packets are coming in and out but I can't get internet. There are a lot more outgoing packets than incoming...any idea what I can do to trouble shoot this problem?

Is it set to use a direct connection to the internet as the default connection in your browser?

1) Is the IP valid for your network?
2) Can you ping or run a trace using command prompt?
3) Spyware?

Before you lent it to your friend were you using DHPC to automatically assign your laptop an IP? If so, you may want to check that the TCP/IP settings in your network adaptor properties are set to "Obtain an IP address automatically". If not, then check that the subnet mask specified in your TCP/IP settings matches the setting in your wired/wireless router (or access point).

Your friend could have also been using a proxy to surf the internet. To check if this is the case and you use Internet Explorer go to Tools > Internet Options > Connections > LAN Settings and uncheck all the options in there. If you use firefox, then you need to go: Tools > Options > Connection Settings and check "Direct Connection to the Internet". Remember, that this step is only valid if you did not use a proxy beforehand. If you did, and you find that your friend changed it, then you need to change the settings back, instead of disabling the proxy as I have described above.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
1. Yea it is set for direct connection.
2. Ip is valid for nethwork. I can only ping the feedback address 127.0.0.
3. I ran it with the scanner on there that hasn't been update yet. Anyone know how I can run a spyware scan off a flash drive?
4.The IP setting should be correct.
5. No I'm not on a proxy I checked that out already :).

Type this in CMD:

netsh int ip reset log.txt
netsh winsock reset

reset your pc
ipconfig (will show ip and gateway ip)
ping gateway (if reply, ping anandtech.com, if reply (your online))
IF ping gateway fails, your SOL, try safemode with networking and pinging gateway

If you can ping the gateway in safemode and not in normal, then obviously its a software issue.

If you can ping and get no web page in IE, check your Dialup/VPN/Proxy settings in Internet properties.
